8.8 Earthquake in Chile - Tsunami Created

Yeah, at 5:30am Saturday we woke to a rumbling house. It was pretty scary to a girl from the midwest. I have a friend that lives on the seawall and she had to evacuate to the base due to the tsunami warning.

When we were here in 200-2003 we had a little bitty quake. This time around we have only been here 6 months and have already had 2 big rumblings and little one last night. I am ready to get my one way ticket back to Missouri. I will take tornadoes any day! At least you know those are coming!

I am also keeping an eye on the news reports for the tsunami in northern Japan as my daughter lives there now. She is in the small town of Itayanagi in Aomori Prefecture. They are calling for a tsunami of about 3 meters high along the Pacific coast there. Fortunately she lives far enough inland that it should not effect her directly. She lives just below and to the left of what looks like a sideways yellow "B" at the top of the map.

People in American Samoa were evacuated.

I haven't talked to my mother in law in Pago Pago since early this morning, our time. I'm pretty sure they're safe. They're up high. They didn't sustain any water damage from the tsunami in September.

But everyone's so worried about Chile, and Haiti, etc. The Samoas are American territories. I haven't seen any fund raisers or drives for our own, who were hit hard in September of 2009, and threatened again today.

sgtmom, I am sure your daughter will be fine. Is she military? I have a friend here that lives on the seawall and they made her leave her home to come on base due to the tsunami that is supposed to hit in 20 minutes. I did hear that waves have already reached mainland Japan but they were small ones.

Equus, I hear ya. We have so many people in our own country that need help that noone seems to want to give them. But that topic is for a different thread...

I have three friends with sons in Chile on missions.

One was supposed to come home today. He'll come once the airport opens.

Another was in Santiago. He is fine.

The last was in Peumo. He did an Internet chat with his mother at about 2pm... said, Chile really knows how to rock you out of bed. His apartment was heavily damaged... roof and one wall came apart leaving a gap. He is supposed to come home in July.

I noticed Ecuador and Oklahoma had earthquakes since I last looked.

The God of Nature has begun to speak His sermons.

It wouldn't surprise me to see the New Madrid fault start shaking in the near future with a big one as well as Southern CA.

Thanks Tabsmonsters ~ my daughter is fine. They had some 4' waves and minor flooding damage along the coast. They were really concerned about the fishing industry as that is a poor area and fishing is the main source of income up there.

My daughter is not military she works for the Japanese Govt through the JET program (Japanese Exchange and Teaching Programme). She teaches English in the Middle School and 4 Elementary Schools in Itayanagi. Japan has an English speaking JET in almost every school in the country so their children learn to speak English with the help of a person who speaks it as a native language. She also teaches American culture. The JET come mainly from the US, Canada, Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand. They also have people from non English speaking countries working in other positions.

Equus50 ~ I hope everyone in Pago Pago is OK. It is a pity that many people in the US do not know how many American Territories are out there and how many Americans work jobs in other countries on Military Bases and other places.
