8 loaves of bread for $1

My mom stopped at the day old bread store. They had bagged 8 loaves of bread in a large bag (each loaf torn open) and were selling for $1.

The clerk said lots of people buy it for chicken feed.

My chickens & guineas are enjoying the treat

Great find. Our local bread outlet used to sell bags of "animal feed" bread for one dollar. (many years ago) I remember my dad buying this and taking out the good stuff for the family and the rest went to the birds. Once I got chickens I went to the same store. They don't sell that anymore. Probably an insurance thing. I suppose they think people could get sick on the outdated bread. I hope it is recycled and put to good use instead of the trash.

There is a used bread store in the city. They sell the bread by the load. You do have paperwork on file saying that you know it is not for human consumption. It is 10 cents a loaf, 5 cents for hotdog or hamburger buns. When you go you have no choice what you get as far as brand, out of date, flavor, rejects, or what ever else they toss in.

We buy it all the time for ALL of our livestock. The horses love it!

My 4 year old and I were out today and fed bread to the chickens....

The merita store here sells it by the cart full, a rack full, and a pickup truck load full. The carts are $2, racks are $10, and a pickup truck load is $20. They call it hog feed, so you may need to ask about it.

I wish I could get it that cheap. The goats and chickens don’t care about the flavor but the cows take longer to eat the whole wheat so they get the white most of the time. I’ll ask about the “hog feed program” next time I’m there and see what they say. You’ll must have more bread that goes to waist then us for the cost to be cheaper.

OH! This reminded me..... Our local Salvation Army thrift store often has a pile of day-old bread. I think it is free. I'll check next time I'm in town!

I have two local bread outlets.. the freihoffer (sp) outlet puts a hole in every bag.

The Arnold outlet does not. The woman told meshe knows some people eat the bread, and that's exactly why she doesn't put holes in it. There are many extended families of 10 or more people in my community, and a loaf of bread doesn't even last through the morning.

The friehoffer sells the bread for 1.50 for a grocery bag w about 5 loaves. the arnold sells a big trash bag stuffed for under $3 - about 15 loaves.

At the arnold store, you can ask fo wheat or white.

Needless to say, I go to the Arnold store.

We have a bread outlet that sells plastic grocery bags stuffed full for a $1 ea. We give it to the chickens, dog and even use it for fish bait.

I get a couple bags every trip and just put it in the freezer.

Just a word of caution.........not trying to make this into a controversy. If it's the manufactured bread like some are.....it might cause crop problems if you feed too much. It tends to be kind of gluey. I think if I did that I would toast it first.
