I have been feeding my chicks Agway brand medicated chick starter. My chicks are almost 8 weeks old now and I still have about a 1/4 of the bag full. Is it OK to finish off the bag before switching to a new feed? And what should I feed them next? Thanks.

I feed my chicks the chick feed until its GONE! Waste not want not... I do give them extra treats and things at this point. I put them on layer feed at 18 weeks.... sometimes I skip the finishing feed all together!

However, I free range all my birds... even my chicks.

You need to wait until they are older to switch to layer feed. They will start laying when they are 6 months old or so.

Grower is fed from about 8 weeks to point of lay, if it is available in your area. Here we get a single feed called starter/grower.

If they have grower, mix it in with the starter, til the starter is gone. They adjust to a change of feed better if you mix them.

Don't give layer til they start laying or you are sure they are about to lay.
