I currently have 8 polish chicks that turned 8 weeks old this week. I have 4 silver laced and 4 golden laced. These are my first polish & knew I needed to wait until at least 8 weeks to determine gender. I am still uncertain about most of them. I took pictures of them and numbered them 1-8. I should just start by saying I just assume they are all Roos…
I figured I would try and guess (although I am pretty wrong):
1- pullet. It has wider crest feathers, it is smaller than many of the others, and docile.
2- roo. He has had a big red comb for weeks, slender feathers on his crest, and overall acts like a rooster.
3- roo. #2 and this one like to rough house together. He is starting to get wattles not a huge comb but still bigger than my other golden laced polish. He also has the Mohawk others have spoken about.
4- pullet. She is small and docile. Wider rounded crest feathers. No sign of a comb.
5-roo? I truly hope I am wrong but this golden laced is on the bigger side. Doesn’t act like a roo and I haven’t seen it rough housing with the other Roos. I am mainly going off of the pointy feathers on the crest. No wattles or large red comb (really no comb at this point)?
6-roo? This one is very shy and so it is harder to get pictures. It’s crest feathers hang around it in a dome shape? No wattles or large red comb (really no comb at this point)?
7-roo?
8-?? I am just so taken back by half its crest not really growing in yet that I just don’t know 😂. It is small and very shy. It has small wattles but they aren’t red.
Thanks in advanced for your help!

3 is 100 % cockerel. Try to get better poofy head pictures looking straight on, from back . And side. Dont slick down the hair. Comb doesnt really apply toward polish from what ive seen.

Here is the easiest way to tell at this age.

If the crest is a poofy round, hair is all in eyes. Most 9/10 will be a PULLET

If the poof looks like a rockstar up on a 5 day binge no sleep, hair going everywhere, not uniform round, and can see good out of eyes / no hair in eye, 100% cockerel

6 & 8 have HARD cockerel traits, but without seeing it dead on without hair pulled down to show comb hard to say. But if i was to judge rite now, 3 , 6, cock. 4 & 8 may possibly be as well

These pics 100% cockerel. Look at the helter / skelter crest. No uniform to it.

1 and 4 are going to be your only pullets I believe. 7 is a toss up.

If you have a squirt bottle and the weather is warm and you can spritz their hats - let them dry and don't touch them. Then send a profile pic and face forward of each I'll be able to tell you for certain.

On their hats, you are looking for
#1 - feather shape
#2 - the thickness of the lacing when applicable
#3 and most important - their forehead feathers. You'll see in this pic (although there are other obvious signs) the cockerel in front has short, feathers growing up and away, where the pullet in the back has short festhers beginning to grow up and back. The best way to see these is by wetting the feathers and letting them air dry.
