8 weeks in and I'm already hooked!

Welcome from a fellow North Carolinian! I Iive in the piedmont triad area just west of Winston-Salem. Love your chickies! I am not getting my flock 'til September, but am so excited! You will find this place a wealth of information. I look forward to getting to know you through the forums!

That photo is cute - you can see she was zeroing in on your teeth. I think dental floss would be much more gentle. Don't let her knock your teeth out.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens.

Thank you, all, for the warm welcome :)

Katieboosmama, we're not far from each other at all... maybe 30 minutes or so! :) Are you new to chickens? Not long before you have your flock. Let me know if you ever want to come visit the chicks. We're getting the new babies this week! Yay! :)

Drumstick Diva, good idea! LOL Floss is much better then teeth cleaning by chicks!

Very new, I am getting my first flock mid September. Hubby still has to build my coop. I love your purple one!! I am getting pullets about 6-7 weeks old because I was afraid I would mess up itty biddies and break my daughters heart!

Thanks :) I wanted my coop to be a fun color. Here's my blog post about the chicken coop transformation (or the outside, at least). We gog lucky and the coop was already on the property when we bought the house. It's a converted shed. It needed a little repair and new fencing but having it 80% ready saved us a ton of money.

I've been really surprised with how well my kids handled losing some of our chicks. I warned them from the beginning that it was a possibility and that something was probably wrong with the chick if it died. I guess it helps that we have 39 of them and none of their favorites have died yet! Whew :)

What breed are you getting? That's great that they'll be older because you'll be that closer to fresh eggs! :)

We are getting 2 easter eggers to be pets for my 8yr old, she has already named them Rainbow and Skittles lol. The others are gonna be a mix of buff orpingtons, barred rocks, rhode island reds, and hopefully a silver laced wyandotte and an austrolorp or cuckoo marans. I too wanted a colorful egg basket lol. We are getting 8 to start but accounting for chicken math, will build for 10-12. Katie wants a silkie eventually, so plan on maybe next year adding a small tractor for her and allowing the silkie to foster some hatching eggs. When I was a kid my grandparents had a farm (actually where our house is was once part of it) One of my favorite things to do was to gather the eggs for them when I visited. My goal is to give Katie a little taste of the experiences I had as a kid.

Sounds like a great plan! Chicken math... LOL I'm just learning what that is and experiencing it first hand! ;) Katie's going to love her chickens and it's so great you can carry on the family tradition of collecting eggs. I agree that it's a chore that I've never minded doing! :)
