8 weeks Old Multiple Chicks

Oh yeah not what I was thinking at all. I thought penciling was thin lacing. Double lacing would look even more like penciling then?
So…

Pencilling is only shown in females.

Pencilling+melanotic gene=double lacing (basically makes pencilling darker)

Double lacing is shown in females and males will sometimes show some limited lacing

Pencilling +melanotic+columbian gene=laced

The Colombian gene allows the pattern to be visible in males and females.

Double lacing and pencilling look very similar, double lacing is just darker.

Double lacing is a step between lacing and pencilling.

(The Deathlayer I showed previously is pencilled from an entirely different gene called autosomal barring)

Wow. Ok. That makes sense. Very interesting. I have never had a penciled breed but I do like the way it looks.

According to what I have read, autosomal barring is not caused by a different gene, just a slightly different combination of the same genes that are involved in the other pencilling, double lacing, barring, and also spangling.

About 2/3 of the way down this page, there is a chart showing quite a few different patterns and which genes combine to make them. Everything in the chart has the pattern gene, but when you change the e-locus or have various combinations of Melanotic, Dark Brown, and/or Columbian, plus hen feathering for Sebrights, you get quite a few different results.
