8 weeks Old Multiple Chicks

I have RIR and if they don't have big honking combs by now, you're likely safe. This is the first batch of RIR I'm raising though, so don't quote me.

Ditto on the RIR comb. Our cockerel had a larger comb at the same age.

They all look like pullets to me.

The first one might be a pullet. Penciling always throws me off. But the neck feathers…it will be more obvious in a few weeks

Lacing is just an outline around the feather. Here are a couple pictures of immature pencilled birds. They have different genetic backgrounds but are both often called pencilled.

This on the other hand is immature lacing:

That looks like a single comb, but it's wrinkled back and forth trying to stay out of the way of the crest.

Definitely an interesting effect

Oh yeah not what I was thinking at all. I thought penciling was thin lacing. Double lacing would look even more like penciling then?
