I had four black chicks, and two that were chocolate colored. The chocolate and two of the blacks were sexed as pullets. The other two blacks i pulled out of the straight run bin. They looked identical to what I believed to be BSL (which is what the two sexed pullets are). Of the 6 chicks, two look like what I expect BSL to look like. There is a lot more orange/red on the other pullets than I am used to seeing, so I am not sure that they are BSL. Any opinions would be great!

Pullet type 2 at purchase:

Pullet 2 today:

What is confusing to me is the pullets pictures look very similar today, but were very different as chicks. While at the same time the four chicks that looked identical, are not and two look more like the chocolate chicks today. Are these all BSL with varied presentation? I know that occasionally BSL chicks can be brown. :/

Black Sexlink girl chicks are all black and their leg color is mostly black in color. I cannot tell the leg color on the chick of the 1st one, but the 2nd one is definitely not a BSL. What type of comb does the 2nd one have as it looks like a rose comb in the pic but it is very hard to tell.

There are different breeds one can use to make BSLs, so sometimes they won't look very similar. I believe there is no set of breed standards for them due to being hybrids, but I may be wrong.

I have a batch of chicks who look a lot like these, they are dark brown and olive layers, so all are mixed breeds. I think mine are Copper Maran, Wellsummers, mixed with Easter Eggers.

@BorneHomestead the legs on the first chick were black. I only posted those two chick images as four of the chicks looked identical. Just a slight touch of white/yellow under the chin..and by small I mean barely noticeable. The other has had me stumped since day one....and I had forgotten the leg color issue. Thank you for reminding me! Both birds have a straight comb.

@Cyan NightThese birds are from ideal hatchery. They list RIR crossed over BR. ( please don't think I'm arguing. I agree with what your point is, I had just not mentioned they were from a hatchery.)

@KendyF if these did not come from a hatchery I would think you could be right. Sorry I had forgotten to mention that!

Thanks to everyone that is replying! I had previously posted the second pullet in a thread about a month ago. There was a mention of lakenvelder....I'm just not confident that is the answer. Thoughts?
