Yes, Oyster shell calcium is preferred but sometimes a hen will not eat it. If so, adding a tablespoon of DE in the feed will correct soft shells in a day. After that, going back to calcium is a good idea.

Sometimes chickens are just silly!

True that..and are you the one that mentioned the Calf Manna? I love it. I use it sparingly in the spring and summer when they are free ranging, but I give it to them a bit more during the winter when they aren't free ranging. Love the stuff.

We're late getting started. So sadly won't make the New Year's Day hatch date. But just got our first incubator and have 19 eggs going late tonight.

5 serama and 14 silkies.

Good luck everyone and hoping for 19 new chicks here at our little back yard farm. (I'm not expecting that many but can still hope).

Yes!

Calf Manna is good source of low cost animal protein along with vitamins and nutrition.

You were so close!

keep us updated on how they do and ask any questions you might have.

Well, now I'm confused. I give layer feed, oyster shell, kitchen scraps 1-2X per week, and I put DE in the feed to act as a daily dewormer...oh, and I always include crushed egg shells in their kitchen scraps, just FYI. What am I doing wrong? They are also free range, from about 9 every morning till 5pm.
The eggs were fine in the spring?

I would try calf manna first and see what happens.
