8x8 Coop Building Diary!! *pictures* UPDATE on pg 7!

The County of Sacto requires at least 10,000 SF of property to have chickens and the City allows NONE. You can ignore the ordinance but they will catch up to you, believe me.

I will feel for you when the chicken police come for you...... speaking from experience.

You will have spent a lot of $$ for naught, plus get a fine.

They should come over to my street. They would make a killing over here in fines. I think there are more houses on my street WITH chickens than those without (we are in county), and only a few of us have large lots. Just on THIS block, I know of at least 5 houses out of 12 that have chooks. One family has some pygmy goats in their yard.

Sac County doesn't do anything about the hookers, the drug dealers, the addicts, the illegal dumping (I saw with my two eyes while both a Sac County sheriff AND a CHP officer, about 20 minutes apart, allowed a family to illegally dump the contents of their Uhaul in the middle of the street 4 houses away from me, and the cops did ... um... nothing). Unless you do something unkind to upset a neighbor to cause them to turn you in, or unless you just have a jerk neighbor who gets off on stirring things up, I don't think they are really going to do anything about it. In addition, the city is on the verge of voting a new ordinance regarding chickenkeeping, and I think there are a lot of people in council chambers who are in favor (only a handful on the council are not, and they're the ones that keep stalling the process).

We had a fella beat the living crap out of his wife in front of his two children and a bunch of neighbors, and several of the neighbors called for help. It took Sacramento County almost 45 minutes to respond and send out a unit. Unless you give Sacramento County (or city) a REASON to care about your flock, they generally don't. They really don't even care about your safety or your family's safety, much less be all up in arms about a handful of laying hens.

I feel bad for you that you got turned in and lost your birds. That must have been awful for you. I keep my neighbors happy, and they all know about my chickens and have since the beginning and don't care.

Katie cat... I have owned chickens for 3+years in the city, even for a year or two right in smack downtown Sacramento with no issues. Also I may be moving to Grass Valley in a few weeks where chickens were not allowed but I owned them for 4 years in the city up there.

Thank you so much for your wonderful comments, they mean the world to me. I am sorry you got caught. My neighborhood has bigger things to worry about than a few chickens, trust me. Plus, each neighbor around me I know well, and they all know I have laying hens, no roosters. But there are fighting cocks down the street housed behind CITY fencing for a ditch.. Hmmm...

How do you like the coop?

FYI there are 43,560 feet in an acre......so that 10,000 for the county limits sounds a bit smaller when you consider it

the build has been on hold the last few days since I have been working my "other" job, LOL. Will be back at it tomorrow, weather permitting. Rain is in the forcast here, so that may be an issue. So, if the good Lord's willing and the creek don't rise, the coop will be finished tomorrow except for, maybe, painting.

Got the door, window cover, and vent screens put on today. All that is left now i cosmetic, really. I dropped off some paint chips so she can choose her color.

Girls spent their first night in the big coop last night!! I was going to wait until I got my two new pullets before moving everybody in... But I couldn't wait! lol. As I put my current three girls in, I told them to think of Monica while they spent their first night in the new coop. She was with them in spirit I am sure!

When I went out to let them out of the coop this morning, they didn't even come out right away! LOL. Munk, my EE, was eating at the dish and looked at me like "What do you want?" LoL! And Joon the Barred Rock and Butternut the Wyandotte both were just meandering around the huge floor space and neither of them came out right away either. It was awesome!!! 64 square feet divided between 3 hens... LOL!! They are in paradise. Until I get the new girls

I will post pictures today of the window and door, and the inside all "chickenfied" now hehe. I am going to paint it a darkish forest green with white trim

figure that will blend in well with the plants and I LOVE the color green. I am very excited but am also soooo happy to have moved my girls in. I blocked off the older coops completely, they will have to adjust laying their eggs in the NEW coop and nestboxes there instead of the old coop. Hopefully they can cope! lol!

Anybody have any tips on getting them used to laying somewhere other than where they are used to? They lay in the nestbox of their past coop, but since they are moved in I will be passing along the smaller coop to a friend. Will it be hard for them to adjust laying in the new coop? I have a variaty of nestboxes and will be making another tote style box today.
