9 birds killed in 2 weeks. Warning... graphic in nature. UPDATE PG 5

1 20 oz bottle of mountain dew
3 eggs that have been outside in the sun all day
3 scoops of golden malrin fly bait (find it in the farm stores)

mix the golden malrin and the mountain dew in a pan (i use a tin pan , one of those disposable ones) and then add the eggs to the top. put it out near the coop, but make sure your dogs or the chickens CAN NOT get to it. this is poison.

i do not know what it is about the golden malrin bait, but the racoons will eat it and make it about 10 feet and die. it is that quick. sounds bad, but it works. this recipe was given to me by our local farm vet. he uses it on his farm when the racoons start to get into stuff.

if you have a big problem with the racoons, i would put one by the coop and one someone else in your yard. maybe where you think they are coming from (the path they take to the coop).

i am sorry for your loss also.

as someone also suggested, secure where the coons are getting in so they have to look elsewhere and maybe will flock to this stuff.
Thank you so much for the 'recipe' I'll be visiting TSC tonight and picking up the malrin. I've got some rotten eggs that didn't hatch from my bator, will those work? they are partially developed. I just came back from TSC while I was on my lunch, I needed T-posts and I picked up some rat poison, but if the malrin works that fast I'll try it first. That way I can dispose of the coon right away and see that he is gone for sure.

eta: I forgot to mention that my neighbors brother was looking for rocks along the creek bed that flows down our property and he saw where the coon was taking my pullets and eating them from the grow out pen. I think I will put bait there too, my birds don't venture down that way and I'll just put it out at night anyway and take it up during day light hours.

There's your 'solution'.
Most hunters are open for the opportunity to hunt on private land, with permission.
Offering a 'reward'? ...let's just say they'll be lining up!!.
Just make sure they are 'informed' as to what they can take!!

I think I am also going to do this. I'm sure there are lots of coons in the woods around me. I have seen 3 on my porch a few years ago and the neighbor said that she saw one killed on the road in front of her house ever morning for 6 days straight a few years ago. I have 30 acres so maybe some one will want to come and hunt. I think I'll stand silent on the reward until I see how many takers I get just for the thrill of the hunt.

yup it works that fast. cousin of a friend is the first person that told us about it, then found out our neighbor uses it (saw the evidence lol) and then the vet. works great.

and the rotten eggs you have should be fine. i do the eggs or table scraps that the chickens cant have that i let ferment in a ziploc. anytime i put egg shells (before chickens) in the compost pile, i would get the racoons that day or the next one.

good luck. i hope it works and let me know how it goes.

ask around to friends if they have anyone that traps or hunts racoons. you might get lucky and find someone that is good . they normally will do it for free. just make sure they understand what animal.

Would this recipe work for a fox? I have been trying for weeks to catch it!

Why not simply camp out with .22 rifle and flashlite? You can still put your poison out. Make it so you can hear commotion. Shoot a coon and allow pups to have it while body still twitches. Will prep dogs for later.

The root problem IMO is the vent. It seems to me that a ladder, some hardware cloth or weld wire fence, a hammer, and some poultry netting staples would be a quick 10 minute fix to stop anything from getting in the vent.

I agree. Seems to me those vents could have been covered in a fraction of the time it'd take to figure out a laced bait for the coons...
I'd watch your dogs carefully if you're going with poison...

This would be an option if I didn't have to work every morning, if we do not get him/her by this weekend I'd be up to try your suggestion. I really don't want to have to go into the coop again to see a hen dead. I'm going to put the hens in the garage tonight and bait the coop. If I have a dead coon in the morning I'll be happy. AT 43 it's not so easy to camp out anymore and not simple, I've got a lot of work to do during the day with 4 gardens and various farm chores, cooking, cleaning, laundry and shopping to do on my only 2 days off. Not to mention my elderly in laws that my DH and I lend a hand to. I'd rather not make it easier on the coon, I'd rather make it easier on me but if I must sacrifice for my hens I suppose I'm going to have to.

I'd say it would because the article I read that sited the study about rat poison for other animals mentioned a fox. Let me link that for ya.

IN a nut shell this is what it said about a fox

If you assume a fox has the same tolerance to bromethalin as do dogs (LD50=5mg/kg), and assume your hypothetical fox weighs 30 lbs, the LD50 for a 30lb fox is approximately 68mg. (30lb * kg/2.2lb * LD50 5 mg/kg = 68mg bromethalin).

It is horrible and just went through the same thing. I hope you get them. We debated back and forth on poison. Part of me wishes we had after the first birds.
I wish I knew what our neighbor uses for poison as it kills them instantly. The animal will be laying dead over the carcass. I have a feeling you can't get it anymore whatever it is. Good luck and hope all your birds stay safe!
