9 month old Barnyard Mix

This is Tiny. She’s a 9 month old Barnyard Mix with a black scab like thing on her left earlobe. Lobes are white normally. She’s broody. So, I have been regularly checking on her and bringing her back into the run on hot days. Several days ago, I noticed what looked like a pecking wound potentially on her. Today, it is black and hard. I’m not sure if this is just what scabs look like on a chickens lobe or if this is something warranting further investigation. She’s her normal (sweet to me, pissy to the younger pullets) broody self. She’s from my first clutch I hatched, so, I’m still really new. Thanks.

It's a scab, & plug(Pus). It'll have to be removed, then the wound area cleaned, & triple antibiotic ointment on it 1-3 times a day as needed until healed.

Dealt with something similar on a hen that was attacked by hawk, a year, or two ago, & the wound didn't get noticed until later, & infected. She healed up fine.

They pull out easy after the edges are softened up enough from the flesh. These are often hard like rocks.

You can soften the edges with either warm water, & paper towel, or hydrogen peroxide. If you use the peroxide, only use it that time, otherwise it may make healing take longer.
