I have a nine month old red sex link, Serema, and Easter egger which have not started laying yet. I also have a 7 month old black sex link, a 5 month old BR and 5 month old Maran. I just started giving them lay crumbles. They've been making sounds like they want to lay but still nothing. We have a very spacious coop and run with nesting boxes and they also get to free range a bit. It's winter so the days are shorter but we're in the south so they still get quite a bit of sun and my sister-in-laws hens are still laying dependably without additional light. Any suggestions? Could my kids playing with them scare them enough to keep them from laying? We hand raised them from a day old each so I didn't think that'd be a problem.

They hatched in April so approached POL in September/October. When day length decreases, that's the signal to shut down reproduction. Now that the winter solstice has passed, they should start laying before long.
Pick them up and check the space between the pointy pelvic bones. If it is 2 fingers width or more. Ovulation is imminent.
