9 toed chick!

I just found a new chick my silkie hen hatched. And this is a first for me! It has 9 toes! I believe it's a silkie x marans!

Cool! I've had a few like that. Some thinks that's a way to sex them, but after researching it, I've found it not to be true. It's very interesting though and fun to have a special bird like that!

It's not uncommon in crosses.. the Silkie may not be pure for the 5 toe gene.. as it's dominant.. and also noted by the straight comb on this chick.. which should/would be recessive to walnut.. All indications are low/hatchery quality Silkie.. not meant as a judgement, just a statement.

I agree. When you cross chickens you can sometimes get strange things. Looks like a healthy chick. Enjoy.
