Okay, so here are two Black Copper Marans chicks that I hatched on April 15th and 16th, making them a few days over 9 weeks old. One, I’m certain, is a rooster. The comb, wattles, and coloring is spot on. The other, I’m not so sure. Maybe I’m being blinded by the hope of a hen to give me gorgeous chocolate eggs, but I’m feeling like it might not be a rooster?

These are my only two BCMs that I hatched this year. Both developed wattles and combs early and at the same rate. One started getting copper neck feathers right away, and he’s now mottled in the back and wings... the other has some copper in the neck, but nothing extensive, or extending past the neck. Both are the same size, neither are any larger than any of the other 15 pullets I got this year at the same time. I have one for sure color pack(EE with Legbar genes) rooster and he’s MASSIVE. At 9.5 weeks old, he’s larger than two of my adult hens. Neither BCM is anywhere near his size.

What do you think? Is it too early to tell? Or can we assume gender? I’m 50/50.

Pictures below. First 2 are the clear cockerel of the two. Next three are the cock/pullet on question.

@Silviaschicks and @cherrynberry Do you guys mind letting me know what you see that indicates “male” to you? Apart from the wattle and comb, I thought the other tells were size and coloring... but I’d love to learn!

The one that I was unsure about barely has any more copper in its neck than some of my current and past Dominant Copper(BCMxBarredRock) hens, so I was thinking female because males have so much more copper?

Their waddles are not supposed to get large and red that early. That comb and waddle growth is way too fast. And plus, they are red. If you also had a pullet right now, it would be a lot more obvious.

I do see male saddle feathers coming in also, actually, they will get a lot more visible in a few weeks.
