Hi,
We have three black australorps that we got from a hatchery sexed as female. However, about 3 weeks ago one of them started to make a sound like those little party favor horn with this little paper spiral that extends when blowing in.
That chick looks almost like the other two. The waddle is slightly darker and just barely larger as is the comb. The back of the head is rounder.
Here is a link to a video of him (?) practicing:

Thank you for your help!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but all three Black Australorps in your video are cockerels. Sorry. :o(

Seriously?! How can they have been so wrong determining the gender?
So, how do the females look at 9 weeks? How can I (or you) tell the difference?

At 9 weeks...yes roosters...and sorry...sexing from the hatchery is 90% accurate...and just like tossing a coin, you can get 5 heads in a row, but if you toss long enough, it will even out to 50/50.
You just had lousy luck.

The combs should look more like your Red Star pullet combs...small and pale.

Here is a thread that nicely shows what a pullet looks like (it happens to be at 12 weeks, the left one is clear pullet, the right one is a bit precocious so yours would be even a little smaller and paler in comb at 9 weeks, more like the Red Stars again)

That sure is lousy luck! My husband joked, maybe they accidentally sent off all the males to the farm store...

Thank you, everyone!
I just counted the end, and they are 11 weeks old, but that doesn't make a difference.
Would you go to the farm store and let them know?

Yes. Ask what their policy is about roo's. Many farm stores will take roo's in return.

You're welcome; and X2 on Lady of McCamley's response to your question.
