Hello my BYC friends

I am having an issue with one of my pullet/cockerels - not sure what she/he is yet. And I haven't delt with anything like this before.

Generally, he isn't puffing up, or dropping his tail. But he seems very tired, and like he wants to keep his eyes closed. The appears to be some discharge and maybe some swelling (don't really have a baseline) but something is certainly bothering his head area. He will scratch at it more than a chicken should. His head and discharge isn't foul smelling.

I have suspected something for about 4 days or so, because he just seemed to lay around more than usual. Anytime I'd approach, he would pop up and run away and made me thing he was just lazy. Yesterday I caught him nodding off and was able to walk up and grab him. When I did he was completely startled - had no idea I was coming.

After looking at the flock today, we have another little Polish who appears to maybe be showing some lethargy, but none of the other signs he is. We have them both sequestered together.

His crop has a little something in it. Feels normal. He feels like his breast bone maybe slightly protruded, but certainly not boney.

Poop pic attached. Yesterday his poop was watery with some undigested crumble. He currently eats green forage, supplemented with an organic "all flock" crumble. We have our own whole grain mix we feed the laying hen flock that he hasn't been too interested in yet.

We haven't had any major health issues. We did have a hen pass about 5 months ago from unknown causes - but symptoms were much different.

He belongs to a group of 20 pullets/cockerels who were set loose with the normal flock about a week ago.

Figured it out.

Most likely MG which is slightly depressing. We had a seabright with a foamy eye this winter, whom we were able to treat without her showing anything but being a bit lethargic.

We will work on treating those who it seems to take down a bit harder. I am opposed to antibiotics unless a chicken is rejecting other tx's and is showing no signs of improvement. I'll probably start some Tylan 50 in the morning on this guy, and an epsom soak and watch the others. But I'd suspect it's been around for awhile with a lot of the others not showing such severe signs.

If anyone else has any other input or advice I'd certainly take it. 😉

You could have him tested for several respiratory diseases here:

The Tylan dose for chickens is 50 mg per pound per day, and it works best when given no less than twice a day. Since it can cause severe injection site necrosis, which I have seen, I would give it orally.

Tylan 50 per pound dose - I would do one of these:
  • 0.25 ml per pound four times a day
  • 0.33 ml per pound three times a day
  • 0.5 ml per pound twice a day
Hope this helps.

All I could find was Tylan 200. Is that the same thing, just less of a dose! Like Ibuprofen for us?

Tylan 200 per pound dose - I would do one of these:
  • 0.0625 ml per pound four times a day
  • 0.0825 ml per pound three times a day
  • 0.125 ml per pound twice a day
Double-check my math! It should be 1/4 of the Tylan dose.

Looks good to me 👍

He is back and forth in terms of symptoms. Still seems uncomfortable at times, but excellent at others - aside from swollen eyes.

He isn't a layer and not part of the breeding stock so I am just going to go ahead with the antibiotics and see how it goes.

Thanks again for your help.

How's he doing?
I just signed on to share.

Tremendous improvement. At my last message his eyes at swollen shut. After 3 doses now and saline eye washing, Here he is just now eating some fermented crumble. Eyes are still a bit swollen, but he can open them now.

I appreciate your help tremendously. Thank you.

How long should I keep up the antibiotics? I am doing .125 x 2/day
