Poor baby.

That was so hard to watch. You said that she was fine when you put her out but was found in that condition and you think that one of the larger ducks injured her. Anyone that knows me knows that I am a firm believer in doing anything and everything in your power to save an animal. My motto is, "Nobody dies on my watch." I do not like euthanizing an animal if I can "fix it" and the animal is not in any pain. But after seeing the video, reading your post and hearing that she looks like she is in pain, I am sooooo afraid to agree with you in that you should relieve her pain so that she won't suffer any more . Her little body won't be able to take the jerking and moving and flipping over. I don't think that she will be around much longer.

The only suggestion that I can give you is to try to wrap her in a towel that is shaped like a doughnut hole. I have done that for my "flippers" and they make a 100% recovery.

This is what I have done in the past for my flippers:
I got a medium sized hand towel and rolled it up (TIGHT) and shaped it like a “doughnut hole”. I placed the duckling inside the middle of the doughnut hole towel so that the towel could support him. There was no room in the hole for him to fall back on his back or side. He remained in a standing or sitting position all day. He slept in a sitting position and sometimes in a leaning position. Because he was unable to stand, he was unable to eat and drink, so I had to place the feed and water in front of him (raised up and sitting on something so he could reach it). I also used a dropper to drop water and vitamins in his mouth. I placed the shoe box that he was in in the bed with me on the first night so that I could roll over and check on him throughout the night. I didn’t want to take a chance and have anything happen to him (falling out of the towel) on my watch. The towel itself kept him warm as well. Throughout the course of the next days, I would take him out of the doughnut hole for a few minutes to see how he was progressing. After a few days, I could see improvement. He was able to walk although he stumbled a bit. He flipped over a few times but he was able to get back up after a few seconds.

I will note that the only thing with a duck is that he will be stronger than a chicken or a turkey poult, so your towel set up will have to be sturdy enough to hold him up and hold him in. A duck will kick and kick and kick and may kick himself out of the towel if it is not sturdy enough. You will have to literally place his food and water in front of him so that he can eat.

You can try that and see how it works. She looks like she has a severe injury that may not be reversible. I'm so sorry about your little girl.

Its your call and what you think is best for her. If it is a broken neck then i am not sure what can be done but if it wry neck then vitamins should help her and she should get better. Poly-v-sol with out iron and vitamin e capsuls disolved in water should help with that. I am sorry your decison is so hard. We all love or animals and wants whats best for them. Keep us updated.

yeah, I cant get her to drink water, I'm thinking game over

If it was a vitamin issue I think it would have been gradual somehow, but this literally happened in the space of 45 minutes. She was running around happy this morning.

We made the hard choice. It was pretty clear she was in a lot of pain and very afraid.

I think it's most likely that my 8 year old was holding it and dropped it accidentally. But I'll never know because there is no way she will ever admit it.

went thru similar situation with a young duckling myself....my misfortune was that he died
on his own from what I believe was flip-over syndrome...maybe I didn't start treatment quick enough??....
I truly hate it for you that you are having to do this difficult task but as all of
us are sure is that we/you don't want the animals to suffer... so sorry !

I've got 5 khakis -the runt of them is special needs. One of her legs is paralyzed from the knee down but she's so tenacious and happy-- another one had a dislocated hip I was able to fix when she was tiny and is 100% fine now.

In this batch of babies this month I had some failure to thrive too-- despite hand feeding, force feeding etc. I feel like I've been running a poultry ICU all month. This loss breaks my heart, I feel like I've lost so many that I didn't need to lose one of the healthy ones too. I'm sure I was sobbing like Stonewall Jackson in Gods and Generals-- just crying for them all.

Well... I still have 8 ducklings that are healthy, and 3 more newbie harlequins in the mail in 2 weeks.
