Great pics, Christy!! What a beautiful thing. I just saw my first black widow ever about 6 months ago. Unfortunately the guys at work killed her.

I love the wolf spider with the babies on her back as well!! How awesome.

Beautiful pics of the Black Widow! Thought you might like to see a different variety represented. I took these in my patio flower bed. I love their zig-zaggy webs. I don't know what the real name is. I just call them yellow garden spiders.

I love seeing everyone's spider pics and love the fact that others appreciate them enough to take pics.

I just adore those guys. I have always called them whistler spiders and have heard that they will whistle if you make them mad enough.

Don't know if they will....I have only managed to make them bounce up and down!!!!

Thank you, Christy! I didn't know about the whistling. I'm going to look that up right now! I'm trying to teach my grandkids not to be afraid of spiders and such. Their dad (SIL) is scared to death of anything that has more than 4 legs. Screams like a little girl when he sees one!

We call those "writing spiders." I've heard people say that if you see your name written in the zigzag stitching, you will die. Not a very good saying. I also read an article in which a woman had a huge one of those on her porch. It got so used to her that she handfed it. I do not like black widows. We have so many of them here: in my greenhouse, in the shop, in the strawberries & under most of the rocks. We really have to be careful where we stick our fingers.

We also call these Writer Spiders, and used to catch crickets and small grasshoppers to feed ours. The kids were little and thought it was soooo cool to watch the spinnerets as the spider wrapped the prey in silk.

Our spiders would bounce on the webs to scare us the first couple of times we fed them. Then they learned! They would wait with 2 legs reaching out so they could catch our offerings when we let them go.

I've always been creeped out by spiders since a banana spider hit me in the face as a kid in FL. I really had to be brave when it came to feeding the Writer's so that I wouldn't embarrass myself in front of the kids. I did use a set of forceps to hand the cricket to the spider, but even getting that close made me shiver inside.

Good Morning luvmychicknkids -

Speaking of spiders... This morning the news reported that Utah is up to their elbows with a Salt Air Spider invasion. According to the news, the come out in droves every 10-15 years and apparently are bug spray resistant.

I can only assume they are harmless because the news report didn't mention any deaths due to spider bites, but I'm sure a few folks with phobias are on a thorzine drip until the weather changes and takes them down the road...

Have a great day!
