A big apology to them mods

Oh, I'm sure I will. I've been reading like crazy while I plan my coop/run/yard. I always go a little nuts when I start something new (e.g. the pile of fabric for the doll clothes I'm making for a friend's little girl has taken over my dining room, LOL!).

Ok, I'm just going to put my "about me" questions back here since my original post seems to be spending a lot of time in moderation).

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I think you could say I’m reborn to chickens. I grew up with them, but haven’t had any on my own as an adult. But I finally own a house, and I need/want something to force me to use my yard (I’m a great pet owner, but a terrible gardener, so I’m betting on the chickens to make daily yard time a necessity). Tons of my friends have them though, both small urban flocks and larger subsistence flocks for those still living off-the-grid.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Zero. I just ordered a custom coop and run that will be delivered in late October or early November, and I’m holding off on chicks until everything is in place. Yes, I know if I got them now they’d be coop-ready when the coop arrives, but it would stress me out not having everything ready to go.

(3) What breeds do you have?

I want Orpingtons (big, pretty, mellow for chickens). I’ll most likely get them from PapaBrooder, as I can either go pick them up or meet up with him when he comes down to the Bay Area. And his are beautiful!

Still deciding if I want a mixed color/type flock or a single color/type flock. Being able to easily tell them apart is appealing, but there’s something visually appealing and restful to me about a homogenous flock. Plus, if I want to defy the rooster ban (like several of my neighbors, LOL!), I could breed one of the rarer varieties down the road. BBS might be the ticket since that would give me a little of both. Or I could just play chicken roulette and see if I end up with any matching roosters and hens …

Regardless, I’ll likely have a few nice roosters to unload this winter/spring (maybe to 4Hers?).

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

Google. I think when I was researching coop designs.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

History. Cooking. Reading. Sewing. I grew up as a historical re-enactor, so it all kind of feeds into itself. Right now I’m working on a big project making doll clothes for a couple of vintage Sasha Dolls for two of my friends’ daughters. So just a bit of light sewing that’s taken over my life and my dining room.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I’m a multi-published author (historical romance; Isobel Carr), which is part of what leads to not spending enough time in my yard.

I own a ginormous dog, Clancy. He’s half Neapolitan Mastiff and half Bullmastiff. My BFF and my little sister both own littermates of his, and as of last week, we all live within a 4 block radius in the Steinway Terrace neighborhood of Oakland.

I have a 1916 bungalow that I'm slowly attempting to restore (it had its kitchen and bathroom badly "remuddled" in the 90s, but is otherwise in very good shape). The yard is a joke though. It's terraced, and someone put in a homemade pool in the 30s, which was a non-functional "Mansquito" lair with a deck built across the top when I bought the place. So I had the bottom knocked in and had it filled in so there's at least a little bit of dirt for a garden (10'x25' to be exact!). The BFF moving in around the corner is the impetus for the major yard overhaul. She loves to garden. So the coop will go at one end of my patch o’dirt, and the rest will be a chicken and dog friendly garden with raised beds and lots of large pots to protect stuff from getting squashed by the beast.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Don't feel bad. Jail can be a good thing....just ask the hen I have in jail right now! She is also a bit confused on coop rules!

You will be fine. BYC can be a bit daunting at first. But you will get the hang of things soon.
