I found a huge messy nest today in some fairly low bushes, similar to a pigeon's nest but with more depth. It had one greenish/blue speckled egg in it, a little smaller than a silkie's. Any idea what type of bird would have laid this? In Connecticut.

I have a field guide to bird nests. Let me see if I can find it. Without the speckles, my first thought would be robins since they are messy builders who lay blue eggs, but I'll see if I can look it up.

Possibly a mockingbird? They nest 3-10 feet up in shrubs and trees. Eggs are shades of blue and green heavily marked with brown splotches. They prefer areas near people.

Maybe summer tanagers. The eggs are pale blue to pale green with dark spots. I have a pair nesting in my yard but I have yet to find the nest. She's just always around my hen house.

I'm thinking mockingbird. It's next to the front entrance to a daycare. Unfortunately seems to be abandoned.

Mockingbirds are quite territorial of their nests. They'll divebomb and hit people passing by. If there is only one egg maybe they are still laying. Try to leave it be and maybe in a few days there will be more eggs and a bird incubating.
