I only have one experience with 24 chicks, but, per the hatchery's instructions, I took each chick out one at a time, dipped their beaks in the water 2 or 3 times and let them swallow the water, and then set them down in the brooder with the water. Each chick seemed to know how to get the water from that point on. After 2 hours of the chicks drinking water, I added a feeder with chick starter crumbles, and before I could dip more than 5 or 6 chicks, the others had already come over and figured out the food. I didn't have to show them all. At about 3 weeks old I added a sandbox (for dustbaths and grit), and they ate the sand, so at 4 weeks old I added free choice chick grit.
Yesterday they turned 6 weeks old! Yay! And they're fat and happy. I gave them their first "treats" yesterday; some carrot peelings, shaved with the vegtable peeler.
