So I now have access to chick starter after my original feed store discontinued their starter. It's 19% protein, and 1.8% calcium. (Medication used in it is amprolium) And because I only have access to 16% layer and the starter, several people said it would be perfectly fine feeding my chickens the chick starter as their main feed, and when the first egg is laid offer free choice oyster shell. The reason being is so my chickens have a higher protein content and can eat all the grass/veggies they want without lowering their protein levels to below reccomened levels and decreasing egg production. Sounds good? But now I've run into another problem...the 8 week old chicks waste quite a bit of their feed. And I figure it will only get worse as they get larger. Do any of you chickens lovers know of a good feeder that limits the waste of feed, and holds enough starter for 5 standard sized chickens?
