A couple questions about the coop and yard

I use natural tree branches for roosts. I try to pick smooth barked ones that are about as wide or even a little wider than my chickens' feet, and I use some sandpaper to sand down by hand any rough edges or sharp spots. Then I spray the branch with Adams Flea and Tick spray and put it out in the sun to dry.

A chicken's toes aren't designed for gripping the way a perching bird's toes are; I think chickens are more comfortable with flatter, wider perches. I would avoid a very slick or slippery surface, too.

Thanks everyone.

Would you vote for 2x2 or 2x4 and if 2x4, the 2" side up or the 4"? I live in Albuquerque, NM. Pretty mild weather, but we can get really cold nights.

Also, anyone know about the Ivy stuff I posted? That seems to be the only remaining question.

Thanks again.

Bree

I use a 2X4 with the wide side up as suggested here on BYC - makes total sense as they are not 'gripping' birds......I have 8 birds on a 6' board and they seem to have plenty of room - I guess they like each other cuz they smoosh together on it!!

Thanks. That's what I will do then. Do you know how much head space they need? I know they like to be as high as they can so I want to put it as high up as I can go without them being smooshed. Any idea how much space I should leave btwn the roof (flat) and the bar?

Thanks again.
