IMHO and having a 21 month old son, the best "kids chicken" is one that really prefers to stay away from the kid but is calm if held by an adult for petting and doesn't get pushy if the child is tossing treats. I have 2 barred rocks, they are great layers but very aggressive, they want to peck everything, pant legs, fingers, etc and pinch hard, and aren't easily run off. My Ameraucanas are nice tempered but a little too inquisitive for a small child. My buff orps, EEs and light brahmas are actually relatively standoffish, which I like, but calm when caught. My favorite is actually my black sex link, she is inquisitive and likes to follow us around but doesn't get too close. She's also very gentle, he can actually hand feed her treats and is very calm when held, she will let him pet her, investigate her comb, feathers, etc without getting upset, and is a great layer. It may just be her, but I'd take a whole flock just like her if I could get them.
