I have really enjoyed reading along. I haven't had a dog since the last passed at 14, January '89. I did have a breeding/show kennel of Cocker Spaniels and while they were not house trained they learned to "Go Out," the dog door and mess outside in the run.
Not like house training because kennel dogs didn't have to hold on. They could come & go outside at will, except when locked in for night.
When it got down to having only -3 older dogs left, I allowed them to come into the house. A few times a day they would go back to the kennel(garage) with me, go through their dog doors and take care of business.
Soon I didn't have to take them back - they learned to go by themselves. That entailed going down a short flight of stairs to the basement. Then through the furnace room , up a short flight of stairs into the garage and thru their old doggy doors into their runs. Then back.
They did that so well, we'd keep the door to basement and to garage open. They would sometimes disappear and just as we were wondering where they went, they would pop up the stairs and join us again. This included our oldest female who was sweet & beautiful but real derpy. Near the end, she would start her trip down stairs too late and sometimes lose a bit of poo on the stairs but finish the rest out in her run. I knew she was doing her best.
The other dogs never had an accident.
