A different kind of coop

I would just add, since no one mentioned it, hardware cloth over the windows as they are big enough for a coon to scoot through. Nesting boxes and roost bars and you’d be set.

Oh yes, that's part of what I was hoping to see some of the details on. I'm currently training Maremma livestock guard dogs for my goats. I'm also working on training them to chickens. I'm hoping that eventually they'll be enough.

My Dad traded a cow for it back in the early 80's ...
Was his name Jack?

It's been a few weeks since this thread. Due to gardening, grass, hay, and fencing (my bull and the neighbors bull will not leave the fence alone), I finally got around to working on what I've dubbed the "cooptie" (get it hooptie....cooptie). First order of business was patching a hole in the floor. Then I installed hardware cloth and covered the back window using self tapping metal screws with fender washers. I also put hardware cloth over the front window using bolts. I left them long enough so I could put a piece of plexiglass over it during the winter for heat conservation. I ordered the water nipples from amazon and made a 5 gallon waterer, and made a feeder using the 90 degree elbows and a 5 gallon bucket (inspired from several posts here). Small cedar trees were screwed together to make a roost. Scattered a half bale of straw on the floor and put the birds in. Pics coming once I get the tires re-inflated and hubcaps installed. I'm also planning on a ventilation fan somewhere. I'm sure I've hyped this thing up to be way fancier and cooler than what it really is. It's beyond a doubt the most redneck thing I've ever done, and I love it. The only downside is that I'm going to have to go into the trailer to get to the eventual nesting boxes to retrieve eggs and fill the feed and water buckets. I'm toying with cutting a hole in the side and getting one of those reverse roll out boxes.

What about cutting holes where the X is

And then build some boxes to install in the saddle compartment (where the buckets are)

Just add a lid to you new box to keep the chickens in the right place and then you could collect from the outside.

Looking forward to seeing it!

Remember, you need ventilation in winter too.
Speaking of winter, what is your general geographical location?
It can make a big difference when making suggestions.
Adding it to your profile is easy, then it's always there!
