At that age curiosity could easily be goaded, dared, and double dared into a prank that could result in the loss of your chickens by kids that just wanted to see if they could catch a little bit of live action farm life taking place, if you catch my drift <nudge nudge, wink wink>. Sometimes just letting them know you are on to them is enough to make it stop. If they are genuinely curious about chickens then all will be fine. If not, at least you let them know you have an eye out.
I, personally, would not point a gun at someone, be that gun loaded or unloaded, unless I mean to do business with it. However, there is no law (at least in my state) that says I can't walk to my backdoor as someone is trespassing on my property with my shotgun opened at the breech with a shell in my hand as I politely ask them if I can be of assistance. A technique I have used a few times before that even earned me a compliment from the local sheriff one time.
'Course the fact that the shotgun in question won't fire at all doesn't have to be known by the person trespassing. I got other weapons nearby for actual protection. This is just for spooking purposes that initiated with my grandfather back when my mom was young. Same shotgun, same concrete in the over and under barrels, same welding job keeping it in break open position
The decorative lipstick tube that doubles as a shell don't hurt none either.
