A dirt run???

I am building my coop right now and in the run it is just dirt, no grass. Should I be putting something down or is dirt ok?

Well, if you were to start with grass you would end up with just dirt after a short time. The chickens scratch and peck up the grass in an enclosed space pretty fast. If your soil isn't fairly sandy, you may want to add a layer of sand to help with drainage to avoid a muddy run.
