I have electric fence on pens. Works wonderfully. Baby monitor on 24/7.

Newest pen, no electric. On the "to do list".

Lost 17 pullets last night/morning, 10 yards from the house, Didn't hear thing, rain all night and figured no one was out hunting in this weather.

Weeks of work, food, struggle and care and $$. The main issue was my not making a priority to electrify that pen.

Lost beautiful healthy birds. Completely my fault. (Not the foxes, I knew they were around)

So today, in the pouring rain, I tried to make amends to those chicks, by putting the electric on the empty pen (3 did survive, and were moved)

The foxes will be back tonight or tomorrow or the next night to get their left over booty. But they will not get those, they will get zapped instead. That's for the girls. 16 more days of work like that, won't even begin to pay for my irresponsibility.

A good quote regarding the balance of nature... from Out of Africa...

Farah: Msabu's bleeding. She does not have this ox. This lion is hungry. He does not have this ox. This wagon is heavy. It doesn't have this ox. God is happy, msabu. He plays with us.

I, like Msabu, could not let that "fox/lion" eat... I worked and sacrified to care for these chicks, I don't have them. The hungry fox does not have my chickens. The budget is negative, it doesn't have these to sell or for eggs or meat.

God is happy. He likes to teach lessons. And I have learned, what I thought I knew. Never again will I be so careless.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Sometimes we put things off and this is one of those times for you, where it cost you, both in the bank account, and your heart.

Know in the future that your pens are now secure, and Mr Fox is gonna get fried! No more easy pickin's at your place!

Don't be to hard on yourself, we all make mistakes, this is one you won't make again.
