So, as some of you may know, I have a hen wood duck and she used to be ok alone but I can tell she is getting bored. it's winter here in Wisconsin, and it is COLD and SNOWY!!!!! peter of course HATES the snow and cold. so I was thinking about a friend for her. should I get her another duck? would chickens work? a goose? I take her on walks every day and spend a lot of time with her, but she just seems bored. do you have any suggestions?

If she is a wood duck i think the only suitable friend would be another wood duck or similar duck like a mandarin, I don't know if wood ducks speak the same language as mallard-derived ducks. Although if she is alone im sure any other duck would make her feel less lonely. Definitely a smaller breed of duck so it isn't too rough on her.

Our ducks when they were alive, loved our goose! You could get you duck a mate or a chicken. I think any of those would work!

Ehh ducks really need another duck. A chicken might work if they were raised together but I don't think they would really bond if you introduced them as adults. And even if they were raised together they still can't actually communicate with eachother because they speak completely different languages. I think another wood duck would be the best bet if you can manage to find one.

Ducks are social animals that really shouldn't be kept by themselves unless absolutely necessary (medical issues that would make them vulnerable to a flock). Chickens are okay in the short term but she really needs another duck (or two, in case something happens to one, you wont be stuck with a depressed lone duck while you scramble again to find a replacement) You probably want it to be another female as well, same age or older (introducing ducklings can be tricky)

I had to keep my Kahki Campbell, Ruby, in the cellar for a month. She had a prolapse and we had to keep her in the dark to stop her from laying eggs. I spent as much time with her as I could, but she was pretty upset. She seemed to appreciate our visits though.

I agree 😊 If it were me I would get 2 more female wood ducks. Less drama with all girls and if (hopefully not) something happens to one the others won't be left alone.
Until then I would try putting a mirror in with her. Our one duck was solo for a bit and she loved it.
