A goat! A goat! A goat! Yippee!!!!

awwww.
i want a goat too.
they are adorable.
we gotta buy a farm. i can't handle not getting to have more critters!
my dream is to get some land and then adopt the goat, cows and piggies that end up in the shelters.
for instance, there was another hoarding case that just broke wide open in these parts and local rescues and animal control are struggling to find space for like 200 dogs, a bunch of chickens, some pigs, some goats, etc.
(and this was really a rescue, i saw some pics and these animals were in horrible shape and really suffering.)
it would be so awesome to be like "i'll take the chickens, the pigs and the goats, bring em' on!)

anywhoo, please post some pictures of your new "baby" as soon as they arrive!!!
and you should start working on the DH to convince him that the goat needs a buddy. show him the goat/mini horse pics!

Another goat AND a mini horse! What a concept! As I explained to his DD, within earshot of him of course, is that it's a darn shame her (soon to be my) goat is a billy. I love milk and can't drink cow's milk. Can you say nanny???

Actually, come to think of it, there is a saddle out in the barn leftover from when the his girls were little...if they had a horse, shouldn't the GS have one too? Let's be fair about this.

Congrats on your soon to be new goatie! Looking forward to pics!

Nick - TOO cute! My mini has found out that goats make good soccer balls...so he was nixed from the goat pen permanently.

Congrates, everyone needs a goat!! I can't believe anyone could be anti-goat!

By the way if you'd like to get your new boy a friend I'm also in AR, and going to be having kids very soon! I'll have Nigerian Dwarfs and possibly some 1st generation mini alpines (or right now possibly bred alpine does).

Can't wait to see pics of your new guy!

just make sure it's not a buck.....

I was reading up on goats and I learned unless you are planning on breeding do not get a buck... heres a story from a goat farm site

"Buck (intact male):
If you are a first time goat buyer, You DO NOT want a buck under any circumstances (no matter what some "old timer" tells you).A buck is not a companion: a buck is for breeding, period. You do not need a buck unless you already have does enough does to breed to warrant it and you can provide the buck with separate living quarters and a companion (wether or another buck- not a doe).

We don't recommend keeping a bucks as a pet because of their bucky characteristics.
What are the "bucky" characteristics?

Smell:
As your buck grows he will develop a distinctive odor. Many people find it a bad smell, others don't find it that bad, they just find it strong. The odor will not be quite so bad the first year, and you may say, "This isn't so bad. My buck is not going to smell so much." But as he gets older, the smell will strengthen and eventually you may not want to touch your buck, because the smell will get on your hands and clothes (and everything else).

Urinating:
As bucks mature and go into rut, the male equivalent of heat (in the Fall), they will start peeing on their front legs and faces. They have a kind of "spray attachment" on the penis and can really spray. He will spray his urine into his mouth and then curl up his lip to get a good whiff. His legs, face and beard will eventually be coated with a sticky layer of urine (irresistible to a doe). Once rut is over (in the Winter) he may, or may not, stop peeing on himself.

Aggression:
As a buck matures, he will get more aggressive. This is natural. Even the sweetest, most well behaved buck may challenge you, as well as his companions, from time to time (usually during breeding season). The larger the buck grows, the more dangerous this can potentially be.

Other habits:
As he goes into rut, your buck will want to make sure all his equipment is in proper working order, so he will be ready at a moment's notice to breed a doe. He will check himself with his mouth (yes, he will be able to reach).

A buck will practice his technique on his male companions. He may also try to practice on you if you are not careful."

just a heads up for people wanting to get goats.

heres the full site with a ton of good of info http://fiascofarm.com/goats/index.htm

Wow, no wonder bucky rhymes with yucky! That info about "checking his equiptment" gave me the weirdest mental picture!....ummmm....must think of something else...la,la,la...

Yeah, some years ago I had to periodically retrieve a buck when he wandered off, and let me tell you, even if his fur just very very lightly brushed against your clothing, like I mean just the tips of the couple longest hairs brushed against you, it left a huge oily stain that stank like a pile of spoiled mutton through the next several launderings. Eeeuuuwwwieee.

I should think that if this is a kid's pet it's probably been wethered though. I should *hope*
