I have some Grandchildren (2-5-7) that like to help me with my birds, i have some sebrights and mallards, well i am wanting to get them some chics they can call there own, already have a coop set up for them along with a run, need some advice on what breed people have had luck with as far as being kid friendly along with being good egg layers, thought about RIRs ,,whats your choice:

I have two children, aged 3 and 5 and so far, the Easter Eggers have been the most "kid friendly". Very curious little creatures! We also have Black Australorps and Partridge rocks and all are very nice friendly birds and the kids love them all. I would recommend any of those breeds for children. I think that Barred Rocks are supposed to make great pets, too.

Orpingtons are my favorite. On the Mypetchicken.com poll they were by-far the winners for "Favorite Chicken Breed for Kids".

EE and RIR can be friendly or quite mean. I have 6 EE's and cannot handle any of them, my RIR roo turned mean, and the meanest roo I've ever known was RIR. They say BR can be good pets but I think that's also not always true. I've had about 20 Australorps and could handle them all; several jump into my lap. I have read that Cochins also are very easy to handle, but they are more likely to go broody than Australorps. They say Orps are also good; mine can be handled but not as easily as Australorps.

There's a breed selector tool on the MyPetChicken hatchery website; see what it turns up for you.

My strain of RIR's.. Not a more gentle strain or breed anywhere guaranteed, These will also get the kids competitive real quick if they decide on 4-H or showing at the big shows..I can remember when I was 5 years old and someone made me a deal..I want to return the favor..PM me

Gosh, those are gorgeous birds, Pine Grove. Not even close to the hatchery ones I had.

I agree! BEAUTIFUL birds. Makes my hatchery ones look, "pale!"
Hey, would you sell me some hatching eggs?

Man, Pinegrove, what GORGEOUS birds! They're beautiful!

I was going to say cochins and second the BO suggestion, but wow, I'll take me some of those uber handsome RIRs.

Oh my, PineGrove! Your RIRs are gorgeous! My soon to be 9yo is wanting to start her own mini flock. She has been wanting RIR's (for eggs and showing) but I was worried the roos might be mean. When I get my incubator, would you be willing to sell some hatching eggs?
