A GOOD Neighbor story

Well if trying to scare off a hawk from trying to snack on my chickens is illegal, then lock me up. As far as I know, it is illegal to kill one, but I was unaware that trying to scare one off was illegal as well. I may have to check into that.

My solution to hawks are dogs. A couple days ago one landed in my yard, with my two pit/dane/american bulldog mixes out and my dachshund, haven't seen that bird since. I don't know if it illegal to let your dogs kill a hawk, but heck I wasn't watching....or at least my story would be along those lines. The hawk took off once he realized the chickens and ducks weren't alone.

It doesn't surprise me that doing anything to a hawk is illegal. But if no one sees you scaring it away from your chickens who's gonna know, right?

and I may not be a hawk expert but I'm pretty sure hawks can't call the cops themselves and if they could well thats just a whole other issue I would worry about

I have one good neighbor. He tells me if the bad neighbor's dog has been seen around my chicken pen when I'm not there, and says to shoot all the raccoons that I can catch. Of course, there's also the bad neighbor(s) with the roaming dogs. Win some, lose some.

I have a very good neighbor I am going to miss once I move, especially since that family buys eggs from me. (The lady of the house REFUSES to take them for free.)

The neighbors on either side of the house I bought are very nice folks. One of 'em has very young chickens and a duck.... I get my chicken fix by talking to theirs when I'm up at my property trying to get it ready for my eventual move. I've been giving them strawberry tops and now they come running to the fence of their run when I walk up to it. Hehehehehehe.

Both families know I'm bringing in 60 or so chickens, with several roosters. Not sure how the reality will strike them once my boys get into a crow-fest, but one family thinks it's a hoot my dominant rooster is named Carl. Y'see, Carl Jr and Carl Sr live there.... and Carl Sr said, "I guess when we hear you yelling "Shut up, Carl" you won't be yelling about us, huh?!?"

My good neighbor story has nothing to do with my animals but he's a good one anyway (Heck he's not even my neighbor. He's my Mom's). We had a bad hurricane several years ago. My husband and I are required to be at work during natural disasters. Before I could even get home he had come to my house, cut 3 trees off my roof, and put tarps on my roof. They don't come any better!

I am glad to see other good neighbor stories. I count my blessings almost every day. I've grown up in this house, been here 47 years, so the ones that have been here know me and know I follow my own tune. Was greeted in the grocery store with "Hey crazy chicky lady!" They have heard me consulting with the Great Blue Heron on fishing conditions, saving baby turtles and planning my landscape (if you can call it that) to be more of a bird sanctuary. I am so very lucky, and I am happy for the others who have good ones.
