An unannounced guest from out of town stopped by when I was out doing things in the back near my girls. The girls were talking softly to me when the person came walking up. The person suddenly stopped at the pen on the way over towards me, and the very friendly girls ran right over

to the side of the coop by them to say hi and probably hoping for a treat.

The guest bent over and started reaching their hand to face-level of the girls...I thought the guest was going to try to give them a little head scratch with a finger through the wire...instead they bent down face to face with the girls, shook their finger at them and loudly barked out "SHUSH!!! STOP being so NOISY!"

Scared the poor lil sweeties half to death and shocked me that someone would try to "correct" the girls. Never seen anything like it.

So then the guest then got shushed and straightened out real quick in turn.

The girls now run to the other side of their pen whenever someone walks up, except me. How long do you think it'll take for them not to be scared?

Geeeez....how rude! good for you, sticking up for them, reminds me of a friend who came over and smacked a Lab puppy of mine for trying to come in the house with her....wth?

People can be odd to animals.... its how they were brought up I think. I knew a usually nice guy once that grew up on a farm and said the only good cat was a dead cat. I am not a cat person but I did have a cat at that time. I was with him once and saw him kick a cat in the head as he walked past with no remorse. He was a big guy but I told him then that if I saw him kicking an animal again that I would have no problem hitting him in the head to show it how it felt.

My guess is the chickens will forget about it.

If you have a little extra time, make a sign stating: NOBODY shushs my girls! That neighbor wasn't very friendly.....maybe you can have some of your chicken friendly neighbors come over with treats to help them get over the shock!

I like that idea of the sign.

I do hope they forget it soon. They're so used to people around them or by them all the time that it's sad to see them acting this way. They've been dodging even the peeps they're used to every day.

Can't believe someone smacking the pup, and kicking the cat. Wow. Bad enough someone would do it to their own, but someone elses...amazing.

The NERVE!!! It is one thing to shush a dog that is barking its head off, but to do that to someone's chickens when the owner is right there is just outrageous! Besides, it doesn't take a rocket scientist or the Dog Whisperer to figure out to calm an animal you need to be calm with them.
