A Hawk on Our Coop (pics)

Thats no a young eagle, definately a hawk. I have 2 red tailed hawks that are always in the tree on the opposite side of house behind the barn. I dont bother them and they dont bother me. They help control the rodent population and Im good with that. They havent been seen near the chickens who have plenty of cover in the yard. Maybe crow decoys would help too, they dont get along. But as long as your chickens are safe, I say thank him for getting rid of any mice you may have.

By the way, if you go to your states Dept of natural resources website you can find what hawks are prevalent in your state.

Could it be vultures(sp)? Or There is also a Golden eagle that is the same size as the Bald eagle but I'm not sure if they are from around the united states, They are a brownish color. But that's all I got until I see a photo.

thanks..i will try to get one..appreciate it..

..the1much...your from new england?...do you know what i am trying to explain?..its HUGE...all brown?..Wendy

Red: I know we have gold eagles in the US, but I'm not sure if they would be in your area. Harriers are another possibility for your mystery bird. They are rare, but distinct in look, with a somewhat smooshed owl-like face and a low to the ground hunting habit. They eat voles and moles and should not be a threat to your birds. I have seen them go after other birds, but it's not their norm. Count yourself lucky if it is one, they suffered greatly from DDT use, and although they are making a comeback, it's still a pretty unusual thing to see.

To OP, your hawk looks like a big beautiful Red Tail that just hasn't gotten his adult coloring yet. It's a gorgeous bird, congrats on seeing him so closely. Your birds look happy and very safe in there. Good job keeping them secure by building so very smart.

if its as HUGE as you say ( cant tell by pic) its a golden eagle ( yes we have them up there, in fact i own a railroad that goes through a bird sanctuary that i have pics that have over 100 bald and golden eagles in the sky.) if its less then 2 foot standing, its a hawk. if its not the golden eagle its an osprey.we have all 3 in new england.

I would have to agree. The pic is a red tail and the other one described sounds like a golden eagle. I was wondering the same thing a while back when I posted about "leggy the potential predator". I thought he was a red tail untill I started researching them online and noticed he was at least twice as big as the writen standard of the red tail. all brown and very nice looking. We recently lost our BO to a red tail and there is a tremendous difference in the two. One of the places I found alot of useful info was on Wikipidea. Tons of info and photos. I did my search by state and it gave me a complete list of birds native to and migratory in my state. It has them classified by type, then alphabetic. Anyway, hope this helps some.

WOW_Nice coop and what a Huge HAWK!!!!!

If you have other small animals-out-and about-I would definitely rethink it---
As Hawks will grab anything they can get their talons on!!

Glad you have such a nice covered coop--(they will be safe--except their nerves)
-I bet he is mad!!LOL!
