Hi, my caught my 21 week old Aracuana singing the "egg song" about a week ago. I was very excited to hear this as we had assumed she was indeed a she, but weren't 100% sure. Yesterday my husband was buying feed from the hatchery and the guy there said it's still too early to tell :barnie

If she is singing the song (I've only heard it once) is she a pullet? Recent pic attached. Thanks!

Both of the chickens in the photo look like hens to me. Many times a hen will sing the egg song a week or two before laying. Sometimes they sing with a hen that just laid even when they have not! I have one "cheerleader" that hangs around the coop and sings with every hen that lays an egg! You will find out for sure soon! ;)

The egg song isn't just for girls. Often my girls start, and have a good chunk of the flock singing with them. I do agree with Peppercorngal, both are females.

Although, the blue bird looks to be something other than an Araucana.

Thank you both for your replies. It was very early one morning I heard the song, so fingers crossed for an egg soon. I agree she certainly looks like a girl.

@LRH97 if not a Araucana what breed do you think she is? I live in Australia and I've head the standards are different to the US...the crest is standard in the UK and Oz, but not in the US (apparently).

That would explain why I've never seen one! The crest is not standard here in the US. The true Araucana originates from Chile and can be rumpless or tailed. It also has ear tufts and some are bearded. I'm not sure about Australia's standards. I know here in the US Easter Eggers are often misnamed and sold as Ameraucana or Araucana. Sort of wondering if this is something similar. Perhaps someone from your area can chime in and offer their opinions.

Interesting. The only thing I've discovered is that the standard is different, depending on where you live. I don't know a great deal about the breed, my husband really wanted some blue eggs, so time will tell. The two girls in my earlier photo were both hanging around in laying boxes when I got home from work just now so fingers crossed we won't be waiting long!

From this photo I do not see any saddle feathers , I would think because of that she is a hen. Also If you would like a better idea (can you get close to her ) in a confined area? if so press down on her back/butt if she goes down into the "breed me" position she is ready to start laying/or is laying.

As others have said, they both look like hens to me. Speaking of the egg song, whenever one of my hens start singing it the rooster starts doing it too.(though it does sound slightly different.) And then at least one other hen will get excited and start squawkin.
