A Heritage of Perfection: Standard-bred Large Fowl

The above is my best cock (he was a cockerel in these pictures), he is not from a hatchery. I do have one hen who came from this line as well but don't have a picture of her.

The 3 hens below are from a hatchery, I am in the process of crossing these now, having been told to do so by 2 breeder friends.

I am fine with years of work, as it has taken me a few years to even get the birds I have now.I ended up with the non hatchery pair on plain luck of a close friend. I am looking for birds who are as good as that cock or hopefully better, does anyone know what Urch's bird are like for lakenvelders? I haven't been able to find pictures of them.

My 8 yr old son has decided he would like to try showing this coming fall and has chosen to show my lakenvelders. This is why I need help from people who know how to do this right, so I can in turn teach my son how to do it right. He is raising all the chicks and messing with them, and will help with the culling process so he learns the why for keeping and the why for not keeping.

Thanks for any help.

If you enjoy them, the work is worth it. I think it is an interesting project.

Does anyone know of a breeder of lakenvelders? Thanks for any help.
Hi.
These folk say they have quality bloodlines, but I don't know
anything about Lakenvelders so you'll have to educate me.

Oh, I found a neat article on them. They sure are pretty!

Or maybe bring some down from Canada?

You got it correct Joseph. In the west coast the AOSB CLASS is won more by the Orientals (Shamo and Aseel and occasionally Sumatra). The winner of the American and AOSB class are usually the contenders for champion large fowl.

Walt.

Speaking of top quality Silver Spangled Hamburgs. Holy smokes! APA judge Eric Nelson entered a pair into the Central Maine Bird Fanciers Association annual spring show which was today. I was clerking with Jamie Carson. The male was smoking! He went straight to Reserve Champion of the Show; if it weren't for a little condition issue on the bread, he would have stole the show even from a rather cook Black OEG bantam cock--ridiculously good Hamburg--huge bird with perfect coloration.

The female was also outstanding. The type on her knew no end. She was just a little rough on the tip of the tail, though, to take high honors, but, ****, the shape on that hen was ridiculous--and size to boot--easily as big as my best Ancona female, heavy in the hand.

I have absolutely no idea why these birds aren't more popular. Silly folks overuse and misuse the term "flighty", and other silly folk believe them. More is the pity I guess.

Walt, it does seem that the Orientals are better out there. On this side Brantly and Zook seem to hold them to the highest degree. Oh, I should have added Blk Sumatras to that mix. They're very good out here.

Lakenvelders are going to be a BIG project.

If I were going to do it:

I'd call Urch right away and get what I could.

Then, I'd get the largest order of cockerels from Ideal that I had room to raise--and I'd hope for one good one.

Then I'd start hatching and culling and expect to see some good progress in 3 to 5 years if I were hatching in number.

Now, this sounds familiar..................

I got 3 broody hens and it's been past 21 days for 2 hens and I smelled a stink bomb smell from there nest.. Most of there eggs are rotten with like 2-3 with chicks in them when I broke them out of 20+ eggs, I use the most fresh eggs too... *** is this.. These are experience mothers who hatched good last year in a lot warmer temps..

I have had less than a 50% hatch on average this year. I know I am not the only one that has had hatching problems. The exact same hens had a hatch rate of 98-99% hatch rates last year, so I'm guessing it's the weather we've been having.

There's a lot of talk about this this year. I've been talking with old-school breeders at the shows who are having trouble, and they're convinced it is the GMO grain. I wouldn't discount it. I haven't had universally horrible fertility, but I have had glitches that did not occur last year.

I feed all certified organic, so no GMO. I haven't had any problems with hatching this year
