A How-To Guide for Medicating Chickens

No meds are really approved for egglaying hens, if you get right down to it. They don't want you to ever eat the eggs since the medication has not been approved by the FDA or whoever is responsible. We usually use a two to four week withdrawal for most medications, including wormers, however. Almost every medication that is used in backyard flocks is an off-label use. I don't know what Terra Vet is, though. Why are you giving it?

I did a little research for diarrhea in chickens and this was recommended by my local feed shop to put in their water to kill E-coli and other bacteria.

So if I use it I should not eat the eggs for about 4 weeks in our opinion?

Thanks for the reply.

Looked it up. I would NOT give antibiotic to them for diarrhea. In fact, it may make it worse. Get some plain, no sugar, live bacteria yogurt to replenish their gut bacteria. And put organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with "the mother" (sediment) in a plastic gallon waterer for them, a tablespoon will be enough. Do that a few times.

An antibiotic would kill the good bacteria. My best advice is to never take advice from a feed store. I'm dead serious. Usually, it's 100% wrong. They may have worms or could be dietary. What are you feeding them?

Ok what about if you know they are in pain?? I have a chicken who lost a toe nail, any suuestions on what to do??

Raw oatmeal is also good for diarrhoea. It seems to work for all birds. So mixing some uncooked oatmeal with live yoghurt means they get a double dose and they also love it.
