Id like to make a list of medical supplies I can start getting in case our chickens s comes down with ,cuts, mites, other things , I am not a big fan of over the counter dog and cat flea meds since I work at a county shelter and see way too bad skin and health reactions shelter animals have delt with , with those products , but I'd like to see what can be used safely. And then if you do have to quarentine a single chicken, would you use a wired dog kennel to keep them in? Any input is appreciated! Im not planning to breed, but just enjoy the chickens and eggs.

Using a wire dog crate is a great way to separate or protect a chicken. Food and water can be placed and secured, and I like to keep them near their flock inside the coop or run to keep them part of the flock. Chlorhexidene, Vetericyn, or saline are good for wound care, followed by plain Neosporin ointment. Electrolytes, or Poultry Cell are good for stressed or sick chickens. Calcium citrate with vitamin d, about $8 at Walmart in a generic, is good to treat if egg binding is suspected. For mites or lice permethrin garden dust from the feed store is good for treatment. Permethrin 10 concentrate (martins or Gordon’s brand) can be mixed with water 5 ml per liter/quart can be used to spray the coop and facilities. Always check any new birds for lice or mites and eggs before adding to the flock, and keep new birds in quarantine for at least a month. I don’t recommend using antibiotics unless you know the exact infection. They are hard to get without a vet, most are not available over the counter, most are not approved for chickens, and most require an egg withdrawal time.

Yes, dog kennels are good for quarantining. As for the mites, I use permethrin. If you want to know how to use it, let me know. I think there’s an article somewhere on an emergency kit for chickens. Let me see if I can find it. :)
