A Humane Egg - New York Times Editorial

It's through my various posts working for government that I have had the opportunity to be on the inside of many operations to see with my own eyes what the conditions are like. And why I can speak with some authority on the subject. We all have to be careful not to say conditions are good - or bad - without some pretty solid evidence to back it up.

It would be nice if hens only produced eggs when treated well so that this served as a protective mechanism for their welfare but sadly, that is not the case. Their poor little bodies are programmed to churn out eggs when given the food and lighting to make it so. And if they don't, they are dispensed with. As has been pointed out time and again, it doesn't cost much to produce more of them.

I like free market for most things but in terms of humane treatment of other beings, human evolution is way too slow for my taste. We have been mistreating all manner of beings for a very very long time and left solely to free market devices it could be decades (or MUCH longer) before we clean up our act. I think certain things in this world demand our attention sooner. Whoever doesn't think that, let's please just agree to disagree and move on.

We as a species have created one heck of a mess by thinking only of ourselves and our needs and wants. SSU, I said I personally wouldn't add to the number of people on the planet if I couldn't provide for them in a way that I felt was responsible and not reliant on mistreating others. And it is true that I would think well of anyone else living this philosophy. If you find that terribly chilling, there is really nothing more I can say.

Folks with the posts about the pigs, thanks for posting. Very interesting info.

Let's put a wrap on this thread. The article is here if anyone finds it interesting.

Be well.
