Hi!
I’ve got a 2 year old Brahma hen. She’s nice and healthy. *knock on wood* I went to let my flock out this morning and Murphy was in the nesting box. Later that afternoon still in the nesting box, and tonight I was doing my booty count, and she was still in nesting box. After being screamed at and pecked at by a highly agitated puffed up hen, I figure she’s broody. But she’s never went broody before. Typically my hens go broody well before the first year.
Would yall say this is normal? She’s just a late bloomer? (She started laying around 5 months old or so. The last time she laid was day before yesterday.) I’d hate to think she’s just broody when she could be sick. She acts identical to a broody hen though. Puffing up twice her size, screaming like a banshee, and the big stinky poops. Just now going broody after 2 years.. isn’t that odd?

Nope, there is absolutely little prediction to the behavior of hens. You just take what you get. My first broody was a breed that was NEVER suppose to go broody. I have had Gramma Feathers that was fall and spring broody - raised me up lots of chicks, but Mrs. Black Tail - went broody last year, raised up three cockerels...and just dumped her eggs off daily this whole year and said 'someone else can do it!"

Whew so we’re going with normal, yay!! Why in the world is her hormones kicking in, in DECEMBER??? It’s cold here!
I too had a breed that never goes broody. A red sex link who goes broody every 3-4 months!
And I’ve got a Cochin who goes broody, sits for maybe 10 days and jumps up “I’m done”.
Thanks for the reassurance:)
