Howdy! I'm a ten plus year Hen owner who has raised many sets of chicks from Tractor Supply and even six guinea fowl one year. Last year a rooster showed up in the yard and he's been here ever since. So this spring I started leaving batches of eggs for a few days at a time hoping a hen would turn broody. Not one out of six did. :(
At the end of May, I acquired two laying Muscovies. A few weeks later, one turned broody!! After researching here mostly, I took the duck eggs and replaced them with ten chicken eggs and three weeks later, Viola! Baby chickens! Three of them. Then four days of nothing so I discarded the remaining eggs and put seven new ones under her. So my question is: do you think the surrogate mother will hatch another round of youngins since the first batch got taken away?

Hi and welcome to BYC. Even assuming she continues to be broody - I personally would not consider it good husbandry to put her through another 3 weeks of little food and water. Hatching takes it a lot out of broody hens.

Best wishes

She smothered one of the babies that did hatch and wouldn't get off the eggs for me to "clean house". On the plus side, it's been so hot here that we would see her come out to swim and eat, knowing the eggs were fine in the feather nest she built. I promise though, that I will stop after this or if she starts looking rough at all. Thanks for your advice.

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

Good luck with the broodies, you never know WHAT'S gonna happen in a coop full of them.

Welcome to our roost! :)
