Hi, my name is Joe
I’m new to this forum, and new to keeping chickens as well. I’m just joining to learn more about my hens and solve any problems I may have with them in the future (although hopefully I won’t have too many) although unfortunately I have already had some troubles in the short time I’ve had my girls.
I originally got 4 brown hybrid pullets (19 weeks old) in May, naming them Marian, Marg, Betty and Boo. Unfortunately boo passed away around 3 weeks later in the night. (Unknown reasons, heart attack?)
Around 4 weeks ago I then got a Sussex hybrid (named Katie) and 2 black copper maran hybrids( named Milli and Lily). They spent 2 weeks seperate from the older girls and have now been living with them for 2 weeks.
However, around 5 days after getting the new girls, we noticed Marian had a swollen face and wasn’t eating as much as normal. Things got worse and soon everyone was sneezing except Betty, Marian was leaking puss and liquid from her eyes, mouth and nose. She stopped eating or drinking for 4 days, and Marg stopped eating and drinking for nearly 2 days. We gave them antibiotics and force watered Marian with a syringe and spoon fed her mashed up pellets. By some miracle she survived and so did everyone else and everyone is fine now and back on top laying form.
So that is the traumatic story of my first ever flock.

Marian when she was ill, and my dog would follow her and cry....
