Three days ago, in 1861, the Confederate government fired on Fort Sumter, Charleston, SC, in response to a United States "supply" fleet that was carrying soldiers to reinforce the fort, despite explicit US promises that it would be evacuated. US president Abraham Lincoln used this as an excuse to unilaterally declare war, not calling Congress into session. He also illegally called for the raising up of 75,000 soldiers to invade the Confederacy. In response, Virginia, North Carolina, Arkansas and Tennessee also seceded. Thus began the brutal war that claimed the lives of 700,000 soldiers and an unknown number of Southern civilians.

I thought it would be appropriate, since this is Virginia's Confederate History Month, to see if anyone on here has any Confederate ancestry. I, personally, am clueless as to any possible Confederate ancestors I may have, although I wouldn't be surprised at all. In particular I think it would be neat to see if anyone has any connection to prominent CSA generals such as Lee, Jackson, Stuart, Longstreet, etc. Go ahead, don't apologize for being proud of your heritage!

Hence the reason Southerners refer to the Civil War as "The War of Northern Agression."

I had ancestors fight for the Confederacy. My family is from Kentucky - I've lost track of how many generations back we go, but they made their money farming tobacco.
 
we are CW reeanctors and we do portray both sides.

Hubby's mother's side was from IN and KY and they fought on both sides. No top officials in the list that I know of. Hubby's father side, none, they came from Germany to here about pre-Civil War but they were too young to fight. They were prominent families in the heart of KY, some were well to do and others were plain thieves LOL!

As for me, I do have plenty of Union soldiers from IN but unknown about Confederacy. However one of my great, great grandmother's uncle fought in the CW but he was a prisoner at Andersonville and died there. That is how close they were of the Confederacy.

The Lost Cause, The War Between the States, were one of the few that the Southerners refer to the CW.

Gonzo, I thought Jackson was married but him and his wife lost all of their kids due to the sickness and diseases. I would have to review it if it is not true. It is neat!

Awww, Theres non of the Jackson blood in my veins unfortunatly.... My ex Mother in law is the one with the Jackson blood... I'm nobody special..

I have an ex who can trace his family back to the Confederacy, but I don't think he was especially proud about that.
 
My husband's family has been here since the 1600's; they landed in Dorchester, Massachusetts and then migrated down to Georgia and were founders of Dorchester, Ga. History is just that-history. It's not all good and not all bad for any state or region. I dare say every region/state has its dark days.

"Confederacy" is not a dirty word and history doesn't need to be rewritten by those seem embarrassed by it, just studied and learned from. Those who believe that the War Between the States was all/only about slavery need to go back and study some more--it was about states rights more than anything else; there were Northern as well as black slave owners. It's very interesting, the big picture.

As far as reenactors, I never have understood that practice, personally. To each his own.


A little known factoid, to bring this back to chickens is that General Robert E. Lee, commander of the Confederate forces, traveled with a pet hen that laid one egg under his cot every morning.

I was trying to find out what KIND of hen did Gen Lee had and some said it was an OE ad some said it was a Brahma and others say it was a Cochin. Too bad there were never any pic of his pet!

I love being an reenactor and appreciate to relive history and how we can educate the public and traveling. With the numbers of reenactors going down, retiring or getting out of it because of lack of public interest,we will probably get out of reenacting as well. We are planning our last year for the 150th Gettysburg which it is about four more years. We only went to two reenactments last year and again this year due to budget and lack of public interest. However we may continue doing living history which it is a one day thing. It was not as fun as it used to be because our old friends went on to do other things, too many units being disbanded, financial hardships and retired and wanted to travel LOL! When the movie Gettysburg came out, we saw a HUGE spike of interest, got more reenactors than we ever had. Now it is down to a few handful. Unless we get another great CW movie, we probably would be on the decline but not totally out of the picture.

Confederacy isn't a dirty word, neither was slavery but it was part of history and we certainly would not subject our great country like that ever again. Too many history teachers get it all wrong when the Confederacy was formed because of slavery, it was because of the state's rights and other ecomonic factors in play.

I am glad we do not have to rewrite history. It is like denying the Holocast ever existed when there are TONS of pictures, information, diaries, etc. of WWII. Shame on them if they try to rewrite it!
