A Little Rifle Help, Please (Purchased Gun w/ PICS!!! Pg 12)

If you use a 30-06 for racoons you might as well set-up a m60 machine gun for them

Yeah, I initially had the same thought.

Maybe, I'll just have to buy a .243 or the 17 hmr for the raccoons, (which are huge around here) and a 30-06 for deer hunting later in the fall.

I guess I'm building my arsenal.

Any additional comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you are not into the hunting thing.... and want something inexpensive..... look at an SKS 7.62 with hollow points.
It is Chinese military gun semi auto. You can usually find them at pawn shops or gun shops.

If you want to dress it up a little you can get a SYNTHETIC MONTE CARLO RIFLESTOCK, 4X30 COMPACT RIFLE SCOPE, AND SCOPE MOUNT for about $75.00 including shipping on e-bay

I have had one for years and it is fun to shoot and I'm thinking about getting the stock and scope thing. :>)

.243 is a versatile round. You can take down deer at phenomonal distance and will work for coon's. Very flat shooting round.

IMHO a head shot is as easy as a heart/lung on something that size. Think about it. NOT a body shot, targeting the heart/lung vs head. They are about the same size target at the very least. Head may actually offer a larger target.
Hmmmmmmmm.......ok, a head KILL shot........

I still think the head shot is an easier shot on that size animal. Just my opinion though.

As for an SKS...........made in China....................not just no but H*LL NO!! Buy American!!

Word-Of-Wisdom:

If you don't have preference, check the store on ammunition prices, no need to spend an arm and a leg for a special caliber.

There are a lot of caliber and cartridge choices between .22 and .30-06.

For me if its little, .22caliber; if its big, .30-06 and if its flying, 12gauge.

Kentucky

I have a 22 mag, 243, 270, 30-06, 300 mag, SKS and a 12 ga slug gun, ready to shoot.

You may want to try a few and see what your comfortable with.

For coon's I'd go with a 22 mag they hit about as hard as most 9mm and 45 pistol rounds. I have one, it works well.

I don't care for the .243 It has a myth like the 7mm rem wanna be magnum, for sutible deer rounds they both drop about the same amount and do not kill like a "lazer beam" Not really any better or worse than a .270 Winchester that has low recoil and is great on deer, I've dropper over 50 of them with a .270 when I have much larger guns in the safe, along with a low ammo price and BTW is much flatter shooting than a 30-06.

Anyways,,, if you want to do some shooting and see for yourself, PM me.

There are hundreds of calibers to do your bidding, some cost thousands for the gun and hundreds for 20 rounds.

If you want advice on avalible and versitile for western PA that doesn't break the bank and will be factory loaded for lifetimes, let me know. Shoot a few then make up your own mind.

I hunt a lot, and have a wide range of guns in the safe. If I was shooting coons in the dark at 40 yds and wanted them to drop on the spot, I grab a 12 guage with #4 buckshot.

If the scattered buckshot was of concern, I'd use a pistol caliber carbine. The only carbine I have is a Beretta Storm in 9mm, but a lever action .357 or 44 would be perfect for what your wanting to do. A 30-30 wouldn't be bad either and any of these could also be used for deer although at much shorter ranges than a 30-06.

everything listed in this thread will kill a coon, so there is no wrong answer. I have a .17 and a .22 mag, and they will certainly kill the coon but if I wanted to make sure it didn't run off I'd wanted a heavier bullet.

A semi-auto, fifteen shot, .22, with Remington hyper velocity Yellow Jackets is pretty effective. I've been using the same old Remington Nylon 66 since `82. It is particularly effective at night when several raccoons are foraging together, or a pair of foxes. Fifteen shots in a little over three seconds.

The Marlin 60S-CF is similar in function and can probably be found used, for cheap (some folks prefer the clip magazines - I've never had to expend all the rounds from the tube magazine at one time, so I'm not too particular).

Good Luck!
