Ok, so I got a phone call that someone had found A&M quail and was I interested. Of course I am, so he brings them by and they are cute. They are in 4 cardboard boxes and they are moslty white. (Some have patches and spots). Anyway, there are about 10 to a box and trying to jump out as we look at them. As we started to handle them, we realized just how skinny they are. Looks like they have been in those boxes a while. (Not my friend's fault, he bought them, then brought them as is). I wanted about 6 birds. Softee that I am, I took all 40ish. They are tiny little miserable things. I gave each one a drop of poly-vi-sol (no iron) and placed them in cages. Since I was sort of expecting grown birds, I had to improvise. They are in two wire cages with ceramic heat emittors and the cages are covered with thick towels to trap the heat as best it can. I fed them non medicated chick starter, non medicated because I was afraid they's gorge if it has been a day or two since they've eaten and I worried about overodose. I sprinkled some parrot hand feeding formula on the starter. I can give them eggs, would hard poiled or scrambled be better? Shells on or off. My adult coturnix eat starter, ground kitten food (about 3 times a week) and veggie garden picking (getting a bit slim in there now). What else can I do to get these guys going? They look horrible, so skinny (although, my coturnix have been called fat by some). Should I get them on medicated feed now or continue with the plain stuff?
Any adice would be appreciated.
(and, yes, I'm doing the quarantine thing)
TIA!

I admire your attempts to right someone else wrongs, but please protect your well feed flock with quarantine protocalls.

I'm no vet, but feeding the "plain stuff" hopefully game bird starter 25+% protein should get them over the under feed slump. I see no need for medication, at the moment.

Basic coturnix feeding should be fine!

Thanks, I am quarantining as best I can. It's getting a little crowded in here though. lol I know I am going to loose a few, several looked really depressed. I hope I can keep the loses to a minimun. If nothing else, I will save a few and learn a bit.
I did not realize just how big (and pleasantly plump) my Coturnix had gotten until these guys got here. I loves to feed my birdies.

Well, just do what you do to keep your birds fat and happy. I don't know what else to tell you.
Maybe others will have better advice.

How old are these birds ?
Have you tried putting a little sugar water in with them?

Hgbf Is Right--- Definately A Good Gamebird Starter No Matter Their Age! I Recommend Purina Startrena. Personally I Never Use Medicated Feed, If I Am Worried Enought To Use Antibiotics I Add It To The Water Font, Or Inject Directly Into The Bird. Some Water Soluable Vitamins And Minerals In The Water May Provide A Nice Bump In Their Recovery. Closely Inspect Each 1 And Watch The Droppings It May Be An Illness Rather Than A Neglect Causing Their Condition. Any Runny Noses? Swollen Sinuses? Bubbly Eyes? Check For Mites... Etc....

Good Luck We'll Keep Our Fingers Crossed For Ya!

Oh Yeah, Definately Throw Me In For An Amen On The Super Strict Quarentine!!! And Biological Isolation!

i am a strong beliver in teramycin in the drinking water i haven't lost any chicks or quail since i have been using it. sojono.

lol I have everything here at my farm pleasantly plump..even my hubby! (dont tell him i said that) those quails will blossom in your care, I can already tell from clear over here!!

Thanks everyone!
They are supposed to be varied in ages between 3-5 weeks old. I lost 6 of the 46 already, but I unfortunatly expected that. The littlest tiny one especially, but I was still hoping since he had a name already (stupid thing to do). I have noticed that they all still have what looks like baby fuzz around their eyes, some more than others and they are all tiny (compared to my monsters lol). Most seem much more perky today and two are practising their grown up bird calls. Most of the rest are still making a peeping sound. I sat and watched them a while today, many of them stare right back at me, inquisitive little monkeys. Maybe I will get a few to survive. I am going to try to save them all, but I am setting myself up for saving 30ish, that way I'm not too disappointed. Since I am learning as I go, I think that would be a realistic number, I hope. (More would be nice, though).
They are supposed to be A@M's, but a lot of them have colored spots, is that normals? It's cute, either way.
Again, thanks for the replies, it's nice to know I'm not stuggling alone here, the support and kind words are encouraging.
