Today, hubby brought home 5 Runner Ducks. I didnt tell DD that they were coming cause she would have driven me nuts all day waiting for them.
So, when DH got home, I told her to come down and help me in the barn. She said she was watching her favorite TV show and did she 'have to help'
I shrugged and said 'no, guess not' and went to barn. DS helped unload the Runners and onto the pond they went.
DH and I sat there watching them for about 20 minutes when DD (age 9) came bouncing out to the picnic table. After a few minutes, I heard her say 'OMGosh, what are those'
So, we pretended that we didnt know. They were at the far end of the 1/4 acre pond at that time. We 'oooh and ahhh' right along with her, surmising that they might be from a neighboring farm etc.
A minute later, they get out of the water and she becomes very excited 'Those arent ducks. Look at them!'. We of course played along. I pointed out that they looked like baby Herons and wondered out loud if our male Call ducks had met a lady heron (Visualize that!
). She finally decides to take a closer look and walks near them. They are very tame and let her get pretty close and then start quacking right at her. She jumps back and I holler down to her 'Uh Oh, There is the Mama'. She screams and runs back to us. I say 'oops, sorry. Guess it was just a tree branch'
Then DS gets in on it and she is now totally convinced that we have a new breed: The Heruck, part Heron and part Duck.
She does pause to ask about the schematics of such a mating to which we reminded her that ducks and herons mate on the water, so the difference in height was not an issue.
At this point DH is nearly have a stroke trying not to laugh.
Finally after about 30 minutes of supposition, guessing and out right Fairy Tale telling, I ask DD if she remembers when I asked her to come help in the barn. She replies 'yes'. I then tell her that had she come down to help like she was asked, she would have seen her Daddy unload the 5 RUNNER DUCKS from the car.
DS and DH are practically rolling on the ground laughing. I am trying not to wet my pants and she is FURIOUS and totally indignant at have been the target of such a joke.
So we now have 2 groups of water fowl.... Call Ducks and Herucks!
