Hi!

My husband and I recently built a coop and got 8 chicks. 3 ended up dying. 5 left and I just realized today that one is a rooster! Big problem since our city doesn't allow them. I've been reading books and getting info from the hubby's grandpa on raising hens. I came to this site looking for new info and advice on some issues I'm having. Hope to learn a lot here!

I think the only times you can be certain of the gender is to buy either sex links (can be sexed at birth by color) OR get pullets at point of lay. There is such huge surplus of cockerels looking for homes that the majority end up on dinner plates. It's probably best not to accidentally buy them at all. I know you lose the cuteness factor and the easier socialization of baby chicks but, you will continue to have males like everyone else. They are all stressed at trying to rid themselves of them in nicer ways.

That is something to consider for people that want to incubate their own chicks. Have a back up plan of what to do with males.
