Hi everyone! We are newbie chicken people. We had 8 and recently (6 days ago) lost a wonderful chicken to a hawk. They are free range in a fenced backyard/ have a great dog that watches over them during the day and we tuck them into their coop at night. Anyway, this chicken (Colombian rock) we lost was best friends with a Rhode Island Red. And now this Rhode Island is lonely. No one is picking on her but she isn’t entering into the other two “groups”. One group has 3 Easter eggers, the other is a group of 1leghorn, 1 golden comet and 1 buff Orpington. They all get along but these groups pal around with each other and it’s so sad to see this Rhode Island Red just standing back watching the others. What do you think the chances are if we introduced a new adult hen to the flock that this new hen and our lonely hen would become buddies? Any other suggestions?

Welcome!

Rocks and Reds are often great friends I have found.
I think there is a real chance that if there was another hen, especially of her or her previous friend's breed, they would be friends.
You could put them in a place of their own to bond for a bit.

Poor thing to be alone in a crowd!
Good luck!

not likely .. even if lonely a new adult hen will be universally a problem .. at best it would be somebody to take her frustrations out on lol ... i'll tell you what ive seen before with a single lone barred rock was introducing a big adult rooster , it was like 'its a man' lol ... but seriously, best strategy is get a couple of red pullets or simply a breed that is more her speed and size .. new 'coalitions' will be formed in the future .. until then she'll get by even if she's not 'best friends' with the other 'weirdo' chickens ..
